New beds mean more planting space! However, planting requires soil. It takes a lot of dirt to fill a bed. Andy has started making his own soil mix to save some on the cost. Yes, we buy dirt, by the truckloads. Andy gets a mixture of topsoil, mushroom compost, and chicken litter from Midway Materials in Pickens, SC. This mix, along with peat moss, and fill dirt from the backyard make up our soil.
One of our many down the road home improvement projects is a patio in the backyard. Since Andy wants to sculpt out a section of the yard for this project he has used the site for dirt excavation. One day we'll find that the space is completely dug out and then we'll have to move on to the next stage of the patio. Until then we'll continue to dig.
